Foundation – Do you know your Undertone?

Post written by Leanne Perilly
How easy do you find it to find the perfect foundation shade for your skin tone?
Most people find it incredibly difficult…
The scariest part? Wearing the wrong shade, ending up with the dreaded jawline line between your face and neck — and worrying that everyone can see you’ve got it wrong ????
Finding the perfect foundation really isn’t easy.
Over the years, makeup, colour and style professionals have tried countless ways to make shade matching easier to understand and assess yourself.
The first step is understanding your skin’s undertone. Are you:
• Cool (pinky)
• Warm (yellow/peach)
• Neutral (beige)
• Olive
As a Makeup Artist, I can often get a good indication just by looking at someone’s skin tone whether they fall into the warm, cool, neutral or olive category — but not always.
Sometimes I’ll ask questions like:
“Do you tan easily?”
“Do you burn before you tan?”
“What jewellery suits you best — silver or gold?”
But most of the time, the only real way to find the best match is by applying foundations directly onto the skin to see which one truly works.
What makes it even more confusing is that every brand seems to categorise and label undertones differently. Honestly, it can be so frustrating! Although I do think brands are improving and shade labelling is much clearer than it was 20 years ago.
In my one-to-one makeup sessions, I help you identify your undertone and teach you how to confidently choose and buy the perfect foundation to suit your skin tone, age, and lifestyle.
